Apple just released four new iPhones in 2020, which are iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 pro and iPhone 12 pro max. Considering the fact that Apple will still continue to sell their last year’s iPhone 11 model at a very much discounted price. So what does that mean for iPhone 12? All the iPhones Apple released this year have 3 things common: 5G, OLED display, and the fact that it comes with MagSafe and a design reminiscent of the much-loved iPhone 4.
Apple has decided to ditch the charger and earphones from the box and a lot of people are not happy with this decision. According to Apple, “People already have all that, it’s sitting around in their house, maybe they have multiple ones. It was kind of not the right thing to do in terms of the larger environmental goals.” Even with this said, iPhone 12 includes a type-C to lighting cable in the box.
The iPhone 12’s price in India starts from ₹ 79,000/- and that of iPhone 12 pro starts from ₹ 1,19,900. Though there are few advantages of owning an For the pro model, it boils down to three main advantages: 2x optical telephoto camera, the LiDAR Scanner for depth-sensing and twice the storage.
The physical design of both the phones remains the same, though the finish and material used is different. It comes in 5 colors –blue, green, PRODUCT RED, white, and black- with a matte aluminium frame and glossy back which is a fingerprint magnet. The iPhone 12 pro comes in four colors which are – silver, graphite, gold, and Pacific blue- with a polished matte finished back and with a stainless steel frame. There is a slight weight difference as well. The weight for Pro model is 6.66 ounces and for the regular iPhone 12 is 5.78 ounces. The new iPhones are thinner than previous models as well.
Ceramic shield and super Retina XDR display
In my opinion, design is a subjective term, but I’m a huge fan of how the iPhone 12 is designed and about the fact that it looks like a beefed up iPhone 4 back from 2010. Apple has made some major improvements to its display by adding a Ceramic Shield, a specially-treated glass – makes the it four times as likely to survive a fall than its predecessor. Even the Rear glass, combined with the new shape, is apparently twice as strong as previous iPhone’s. With IP68 water and dust resistance, it is survivable underwater upto a depth of 6 meters for around 30 minutes.
Ceramic Shield protects the new Super Retina XDR screen, a custom 6.1-inch OLED panel running at 2532 x 1170 resolution. As expected, it comes with True Tone which adjust your brightness, color temperature according to your ambient conditions.
The display is really good to view some HDR content and have great viewing angles and contrast.
Apple had to choose between 5G or ProMotion display (120Hz display) so Apple decided to go with 5G, which means this phone still comes with a 60 Hz display, which is not a bad thing considering the fact that most of the previous iPhone users will not notice any difference at all. If you are coming from a high refresh rate display, then you might be disappointed.
Mag Safe for iPhone
Just flip the phone over and you are introduced with Mag Safe! Underneath the back glass, comes a magnetic coil which will help you to attach the new Mag Safe charger and comes with some new accessories which Apple provides such as a credit card wallet. The new Mag Safe supports 15W of wireless charging, making it twice as fast as third party Qi chargers.
The Mag Safe Charger cost ₹ 4500 in India and it comes with a type C to lighting cable in the box. So you might need a new 20W charger. Well to be honest, Mag Safe feels a bit gimmicky because of its cost and the credit card wallet holder can easily fall off while removing your iPhone from your pocket.
Battery and 5G
Apple never likes to talk about physical battery size as numbers doesn’t always represent better performance, but the new iPhones provide better battery life than its previous generations. Both the iPhones lasted throughout the day with single digit battery by evening. When it comes to battery optimization, iPhone tends to good.
Let’s talk about 5G. It’s the headline feature of iPhones this year. 5G itself is a confusing topic, since it covers a whole range of types and bands that can add up to different types of results. Most of the people don’t care about 5G just because most of the time, the 5G connectivity is pretty low and even if you manage to get a good speed, the network derails as soon as you move away from that sweet spot. Apple’s introduced a new feature called Smart Data mode, which promises to balance performance with battery life.
Both iphone 12 and iphone 12 pro have a 12 -megapixel wide camera (f/1.6) with OIS and a 12-megapixel ultra-wide (f/2.4); the iPhone 12 Pro adds a 12-megapixel 2x telephoto (f/2.0) with OIS. Either way you get HDR 3 for photos, Night mode, the Deep Fusion system, and a Portrait mode. On the video side, both the phones can shoot up to 4k at 60 fps and you also get Dolby Vision HDR video which can record – At 30 fps on iPhone 12 and 60 fps on iPhone 12 pro. That’s not the only difference, this smartphone also supports the new ProRAW still format, and Night mode portrait shots. But most of people don’t care about the on-paper performance, but rather about what shows up on their camera roll, and I’m happy to say that the results are quite amazing.
The iPhone 12 pro relies on the LiDAR sensor. The benefits of this sensor is that it improves the overall low- lighting focusing and is very beneficial for augmented reality (AR) which I’m pretty sure is not that popular yet. Low light photography seems a bit faster and more accurate on iPhone 12 Pro.
It does offer some new features and Pro model does have that extra lens and that new LiDAR sensor, but those who are using last year’s iPhone, probably shouldn’t upgrade just for photographic performance’s sake.
iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro verdict
Like a lot of people, I want to see what the iPhone 12 Pro max has to offer and how does it competes with other ultra-high end smartphones in the market. At the same time I’m a little excited about the iPhone 12 mini, a much smaller phone which offers the same performance as iPhone 12 but a bit cheap.
Sandwiched between the middle are iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 pro, they feel a bit more mainstream and practical for the user who buying an iPhone for the first time. Both the iPhones come with good design and in a variety of colors and look very stylish and classy. MagSafe takes us a little bit closer to the ‘port less iPhone’, which apple indeed to do at some point in future. While the LiDAR sensor, Apple takes a step forward to augmented reality (AR) which is bound to improve over time. And how can we forget about 5G, which is still in the developing stage, but will soon be the future.
Both the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 pro were released by Apple on 13 October 2020 in their keynote event.
The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro comes with an excellent display and great camera packed with the new 5mm A14 Bionic chip and tight integration of software and hardware. To all the people eager to buy the new iPhone, wait a little bit longer for the reviews and then make a decision.
