Apple AirPods 2nd Generation sounds and feels similar, but comes with couple of new features.
It’s been already four years since Apple launched their first generations of AirPods, since then, AirPods have been a huge success in the market. Apple In march 2019 announced their Apple AirPods 2nd generation with a handful of new features and also with a new H1 chip which replaces the W1 chips which was used in previous generations. The H1 chip is a lot faster in terms of connectivity. Regardless of that, the AirPods comes with same white color as the previous generations.

The second generation of AirPods looks identical to that of the first generations, even the charging case is same as the previous generation. The overall design looks like the ear buds which Apple uses to sell with their iPhone but with no wires.

These new Apple AirPods are entirely wire-free and are made up of white shiny plastic looking material. AirPods are designed in such a way that it can fit into your ears with ease. But do keep in mind that these AirPods do not offer any noise cancellations feature, so you can still hear the noise around you. For the most part, these Airpods fit into your ear’s quite easily, but not everyone finds them comfortable and some people don’t like to wear them while exercising or travelling.

Because there are no wires, Apple AirPods 2nd generation can work independently. These AirPods also have motion sensor and dual optical sensor which enables features like tap gesture and ear detection. They can tell whether they are placed in your ear and when they are taken outside, and  accordingly it pauses and resumes music.

H1 chip

Apple AirPods 1st generation uses the W1 chip while the second generation of AirPods uses the new H1 chip. The H1 chip allows for more efficient Bluetooth connectivity, increased range, longer talk time, and fast switching between your Mac or iPad or Apple watch.  AirPods are tied to your iCloud account and can be paired to any or all devices signed into that very same iCloud account. With iOS 14, automatic device switching has been enabled, therefore these AirPods will automatically switch between iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch as you utilize them with no must access bluetooth controls to swap devices.

The new H1 chip also connects 1.5x faster and the gaming latency has been reduced by 30 percent. These AirPods can also use Bluetooth for connectivity if you are using a Windows PC or any android devices.

A couple of new and handy features have been introduced in the AirPods 2 such as-

1. Two pair of AirPods can be paired to one iPhone or iPad.
2. Because of the new H1 chip provided in 2nd generation, AirPods now supports hands free siri feature that lets you activate siri by saying “hey Siri”, instead of taping the AirPods to activate Siri commands.

Some of the commands and gestures which the Apple AirPods 2nd generation offers are-

• Siri activation
• Play/Pause music
• Go to the previous track
• Turn off audio content

Keep in mind the gestures can be change via your iPhone using settings on iPhone or iPad.

Sample of AirPods Siri commands:
• Play some new music
• Play my “Favorites” playlist
• Skip to the next song
• Turn down the volume
• Turn up the volume
• Pause music
• What’s the current battery life?
• What’s the temperature outside?

3. With the new H1 chip, now you can get 50 percent more talk time.

AirPods charging case

With the launch of Apple AirPods 2nd generation, Apple have introduced a new wireless charging case for AirPods.
With the new AirPods wireless charging case, they can be charged with any Qi charger that you just might have already got for your iPhone.

Apple also sells separate wireless charging case for 1st generation Apple AirPods, even second generation AirPods are available with non-wireless charging case as well. The case looks exactly identical to the first generation AirPods wireless charging case and the only way to differentiate is by looking the LED indicator. The case charges your AirPods automatically depending upon the charging of the case. The LED indicates different levels of charging status of the case.

Battery life

Apple AirPods 2nd generation lasts for 5 hours on continuous music on a single charge, but if you are using them for calls, it only works for 3 hours.
There has been an overall battery improvement for 2nd generation AirPods and the improvement mainly comes from the new H1 chip and the fact that the 2nd generation AirPods supports bluetooth 5.0 as well.

With the AirPods charging case or wireless charging case, you’ll be able to get over 24 hours of listening time or up to 18 additional hours of talk time. It comes with fast charging, so putting your AirPods into the Wireless Charging Case for 15 minutes gives you three hours of listening time.

The battery notifications are added in IOS 14 which gives you a detailed info about your battery status and the new battery health feature is also being released to preserve the battery longevity of the AirPods.

So the main question arises is “Should you buy Apple AirPods 2nd generation?”

Well, if you are using first Gen AirPods and if they are still working properly, then don’t go for 2nd Gen AirPods as you are really not gaining anything here. But if you are new to the AirPods stuff and you know they will fit in your ears properly, then you should definitely buy one, as they are still amongst the best truly wireless headphones in the market with good battery life, solid connectivity and great ease of us. And they even work great with Android devices. But with the new wireless charging case, the price has increased a bit, but for most people AirPods are still hard to beat.
