For the past couple of years, Acer has been producing really amazing gaming laptops which are well under 1000$ (₹73,000) and offers good gaming performance and entertainment without giving a major damage to your wallet. So the laptop which we are talking about is the Acer Nitro 5 2020. For this laptop, Acer has decided to go with Intel’s i5 -9300H processor, which is a really good and well known processor for gaming and productivity.

1) Looks and aesthetics

Overall, this Acer Nitro 5 laptop is made up of black texture plastics with a rear red panel, which is not a bad thing considering the price point. The red on black keyboard looks really good, but the problem is the low contrast because unless you are in a dark room, you won’t be able to see the red backlit keyboard. You’ll find two USB 3.2 Type-A ports, a Killer Ethernet port, an audio jack, and a security lock slot on the left side of the laptop. The USB-C 3.2 port and HDMI video output on the right are joined by another Type-A port. At the rear, the AC adapter plugs in. Sadly, it does not come with an SD card slot, but Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth handles connectivity with great ease, so you won’t be having any problems here.

The full HD screen, which pushes average brightness with good contrast, is surrounded by medium thin bezels. The display is good, nothing out of the ordinary. The brightness is good, colors don’t pop out and are reasonably vivid and well saturated. As it is a mid-range laptop, it comes with a 60Hz display, which can be overclocked up to 90Hz.

The audio is quite okay in my opinion as it lacks bass in it. But Acer Nitro 5 offers some audio tuning option via their app, by which audio can be customized accordingly. There is a shallow, snappy typing feel you get when you use the keyboard. The keyboard is smooth to use. Above the numeric keypad, there are tiny but dedicated House, End, Page Up, and Page Down keys. The button-less touchpads taps and glides smoothly and clicks stiffly.

A special key near the keypad launches a Nitro Sense utility which displays GPU and CPU usage, power delivery and fan speed. It also provides access to audio presets and also to NVIDIA’s GeForce Experience utility. You can even set the fan either to ‘not too noisy max mode’ or click ‘Cool Boast’ to increase the fan speed.

2) Performance

Acer Nitro 5 2020 has an i5-9300H which is clocked at around 4.1 GHz and comes with NVIDIA’s latest mid-range graphic card which is gtx 1650, which has 4 GB of VRAM. It also comes with an 8GB of DD4R ram which is expandable to up to 32 GB. For the storage, you get a 256 GB Solid State Drive for faster booting times and 1TB of hard disk drive for storing games and other necessary files. Two slots for M.2 Gen 3 x 4 PCIe SSDs using NVMe technology in Raid are also provided.

Now talking about the gaming and day to day performance, most of the applications such as Photoshop and the premier pro, it will handle these tasks without any problem. Even heavy applications such as 3ds Max or blender will run fine without any issues.

Talking about gaming, you will be able to run modern age AAA titles on medium to high presets at 1080p and around 50-60 fps depending upon games. We ran Farcry 5, Rise of Tomb Raider and Witcher 3 on this Acer Nitro 5 laptop which are pretty heavy games.

FARCRY 5 Normal presets 65
FARCRY 5 Ultra presets 55
RISE OF TOMB RAIDER Medium presets82
RISE OF TOMB RAIDER Very high presets 58
WITCHER 3 Ultra presets 35.4
WITCHER 3 High presets 61.1

As you can see, we can achieve around 60 fps. On medium or with a mix of medium to high settings, you can get around 30 fps as well.

3) Battery test

Acer Nitro 5 2020 is unbelievable in the battery department. You will be impressed to see how well this Acer gaming  laptop handles power consumptions and how well the battery is optimized. Acer has equipped this laptop with a 55 Watt hours battery which allows it to achieve excellent run-times.

Acer Nitro 5 battery lasts about 8 hours in practical Wi-Fi battery live test, during which the display brightness was reduced to around 150 CD/m² and all power saving features were turned off. Predictably, if you have more than average usage, the system needs recharging much earlier. But overall, Acer Nitro 5 battery life is far better than other gaming laptops in the same budget segment.

4) Verdict

The Acer Nitro 5 2020 is a balanced package at a fair price. The combination of coffee lake processor with a Turing GPU breezes through almost all the applications we have mentioned above without any issues as such. The inclusion of fast PCIe SSD is much appreciated.

By far, the biggest highlight of the Acer Nitro 5 is the battery life. The device is perfect for those who are very fond of gaming. It is even better for those who like to check emails and browsing through the web or even get their work done without being chained to a power outlet.

“While it suffers from certain shortcomings and compromises, the Acer Aspire Nitro 5 is a great money value”.

The overall build quality is nothing out of the ordinary and we can see that Acer have cut some corners to decrease the price which can be seen in the ‘speakers’ and ‘display’ department, but don’t let that fool you! The Acer Aspire Nitro 5 2020 is a great gaming and value for money laptop.
